NaNoWriMo 2014: Day 22

Small victories.

Once upon a time, my website received no views for days and sometimes weeks at a time. I now receive over 1,500 views a month, and as November is telling me, over 2,000+ in a month.

It's rare for anything not to start from nothing. Sure, some people have publishers enter bidding wars over their debut novels, or someone's first Kindle ebook soars to the top of the bestsellers list for weeks at a time. Those are the exceptional cases, because they're the exceptions, not the rule.

I try to draw from my own experiences of running a writing group of over two years to make sense of things. In the first three months I had no more than two members show up regularly. It was two regular members who decided to take time out of their day when no one else would.

Now I have one of the largest writing groups in the area, and if we're not the largest, we're certainly the most active. I don't mean to brag, but I am right now. My members make the group. I wouldn't have anything if they didn't show up week after week, year after year.

Yes, if you start your own group you'll experience something similar. Months of no one showing up, contemplation on why you're even doing this stupid thing, and varying shades of regret; and that will pass. Like anything, it's small beginnings.

Is your blog not getting an views? Don't give up, keep posting. Is your first book not selling? Don't give up, keep writing. Is your writing slowing down? Don't give up, keep pushing through. We're nearly at the end, and most of us have done more work in twenty-two days than people have done in years.

Let's keep going.
